Unlocking Opportunities: Barkuma’s Board Observership Program

3rd December, 2024

In a society that strives for inclusivity, the representation of people with disabilities in leadership roles remains a critical area for growth. Barkuma, a profit-for-purpose enterprise established in 1967, is stepping up to change this narrative through its innovative Board Observership Program. This initiative aims to cultivate governance skills among individuals with disabilities, providing them the opportunity to influence decision-making processes at the highest levels of the organisation.

Bridging the Gap in Labor Force Participation

Barkuma’s mission is clear: to partner with the community in delivering services that enhance the lives of people with disabilities. Understanding that the first step towards achieving true representation is empowering individuals with the skills needed to thrive in leadership roles, Barkuma is introducing an inaugural Board Observership Program. By facilitating this program, Barkuma seeks to bridge the significant gap in labour force participation rates between individuals with and without disabilities.

A Hands-On Learning Experience

This 10-month program offers valuable insights and hands-on experience at the board level, allowing the successful candidate to observe and engage with various Board and Subcommittee meetings. These meetings serve as essential platforms where strategic directions and pressing issues affecting the disability sector are discussed. As the candidate participates, their unique perspectives and lived experiences can enrich discussions, challenge assumptions, and shed light on the real-world implications of board decisions.

Empowering Voices in Decision-Making

Despite being non-voting members, the participant will be encouraged to voice their opinions on various topics. This arrangement not only amplifies the customer voice within Barkuma but also inspires a culture of inclusivity and open dialogue. By placing individuals with disabilities at the heart of decision-making processes, Barkuma reaffirms its commitment to making meaningful changes within the disability sector.

Comprehensive Training and Mentoring

The program extends beyond mere observation. The participant will benefit from tailored external training through the Boardwise platform, which includes modules on essential governance topics, risk management, and cyber security. This structured learning enhances the participants’ knowledge base, preparing them for future roles in governance and leadership, whether within Barkuma or in other organisations. Additionally, support and reasonable adjustments can be provided to the participant, depending on their accessibility requirements and support needs, ensuring an inclusive and effective learning experience for everyone involved.

A significant highlight of the program is the one-on-one mentoring participants receive from seasoned Board members, including the CEO. This mentorship provides critical industry insights and assists in forming valuable professional networks, helping to increase confidence and competence in navigating the complexities of board responsibilities.

Shaping a More Inclusive Future

By the end of the program, Barkuma hopes that the participant will be well-equipped to advance their careers, potentially stepping into board roles across various sectors. This is not merely about fulfilling organisational goals; it is about weaving the voices of individuals with disabilities into the fabric of Barkuma’s governance, ensuring that decision-makers truly understand the needs and experiences of the community they serve.

Continuous Improvement Through Evaluation

Evaluation of the program will involve collecting feedback from both directors and participants, ensuring that Barkuma continuously refines its approach. Insights gained will play a crucial role in shaping the program’s future, with the ultimate goal of increasing the representation of people with disabilities in decision-making roles across Australia.

Barkuma’s Board Observership Program is a commendable step toward fostering leadership among people with disabilities, transforming lives, and creating a more inclusive future.
