A Strong Start: Reflecting on Term One of Barkuma’s Transition to Work Program

The first term of Barkuma’s Transition to Work Program has wrapped up, and what a start it has been. This milestone marks the beginning of an exciting journey for young people stepping from school toward the world of work.

It’s more than a pathway to employment.
It is about building confidence, growing independence and creating connections that open doors for the future.

Building Work Readiness Through Real-World Learning

From day one, students have been out and about, building work readiness skills and learning by doing.

A highlight this term was a hands-on scavenger hunt through the Adelaide Central Market. Students explored real workplaces, observed how teams operate and put their communication and problem-solving skills into action. Along the way, they unpacked job roles, teamwork and workplace health and safety in a way that felt practical, engaging and genuinely fun.

This kind of learning doesn’t just teach skills, it gives students a clearer, real-world view of how workplaces operate.

Finding Their People

Just as important as skill-building has been connection.

Through shared activities, group conversations and plenty of laughter, students have formed friendships and found a sense of belonging that continues to grow each week.

They say it best themselves:
“Our Friday group is like a big family.”
“I have finally found my people.”
“I feel safe and can be my true self.”
“Attending the program is the highlight of my week.”

That sense of belonging is powerful. It builds confidence, encourages participation and creates a strong foundation for what comes next.

Confidence That Carries Beyond the Classroom

The impact of the program doesn’t stop when the day ends.

Families are already seeing meaningful changes at home, with young people stepping forward, taking initiative and backing themselves in new ways.

One parent shared:
“Since attending Barkuma, she is challenging herself more to step outside her comfort zone. We are just so pleased for her and proud of her.”

While another parent said “Barkuma has been the best thing for him”

Others have noticed growing independence, from travelling on their own to forming new friendships. These are the moments that matter, the quiet wins that build toward bigger outcomes.

Exploring What’s Possible

This term has also sparked curiosity about the future.

Students have started exploring a wide range of career interests, from hospitality, retail and customer service through to creative industries, aviation, events and administration.

While interests are diverse, the focus remains clear: building real, achievable pathways into employment, particularly in industries where many young people begin their careers.

Getting Ready for Work Experience

Looking ahead, work experience is on the horizon later in the year.

From term four, students will step into real workplaces, apply their skills, build confidence and experience what a working environment truly feels like.

These placements are more than just a milestone. They are a chance to test ideas, grow capability and take meaningful steps toward employment, all with the support of the Transition Program team.

Building Employment Pathways That Last

The Transition Program is part of a bigger picture.

It connects young people with disability to long-term employment pathways, supporting them as they move from learning into meaningful work. With the right support in place, these pathways grow over time, building sustainable, rewarding employment outcomes.

Looking Ahead

Term one has laid a strong and energising foundation.

Students are gaining skills, forming connections and starting to see what is possible for their future. Over the coming terms, this momentum will continue with a Certificate course, ongoing skill development, preparation for work experience and deeper exploration of employment pathways.

And if you ask the students, they’ll tell you exactly how it feels:
“It’s the highlight of my week.”
