Damien’s move into open employment shows what’s possible when the right support, training and opportunities come together.
At Barkuma, the Developmental Pathways Team supports people with a learning disability, autism or developmental disability who want to explore open employment. It starts with a conversation, understanding what someone is looking for and helping them take the next step.
For Damien, that meant building skills through targeted work training, and being supported to prepare for a new work environment. A key part of the process is the connection between teams. Barkuma’s Developmental Pathways and Employment Pathways teams work closely together to make the transition to open employment as smooth as possible, coordinating support, sharing information and ensuring each person is ready.
When Damien started his work trial, he was supported by his Job Coordinator and brought with him the skills he had been building along the way. This gave him the confidence to step into the role, demonstrate his abilities, and gain real workplace experience. Following the trial, Damien was offered a full-time job, an important milestone that reflects both his effort and the support around him.
Barkuma has strengthened this approach through funding from the Australian Government’s Structural Adjustment Fund. This investment supports improved pathways from supported employment to open employment, with a focus on practical training, clearer processes and stronger connections between teams.
