New Supported Independent Living Vacancies in Adelaide

Discovering a place to call home that not only meets but exceeds expectations can be a challenge for many, particularly for those navigating the complexities of NDIS Home and Living supports like Supported Independent Living (SIL). However, nestled in the heart of Adelaide’s North, a brand-new beacon of opportunity has emerged for individuals seeking NDIS home and living vacancies.

Ridley Road Grand Opening

The grand opening of Ridley Road accommodation on 17 July illustrates a significant leap forward in achieving that goal. Local members of parliament, Lee Odenwalder and Matt Burnell, the Shadow Minister for Communities, Disabilities and Youth, The Honourable Heidi Girolamo, and the Mayor of the City of Playford, Glenn Docherty, were all in attendance. Kaurna leader Steven Warrior provided a cleansing of the site.

At the heart of Ridley Road’s philosophy lies a keen understanding of the unique challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in finding suitable living arrangements that cater to their needs while fostering independence. The introduction of this purpose-built facility emerges as a beacon of opportunity, promoting not only the well-being of its residents but also their growth and self-sufficiency within a supportive community framework.

Ridley Road accommodation distinguishes itself by providing five self-contained units, designed carefully to ensure privacy and individuality for each resident. These units include a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and living/dining area. They offer a blend of independent living and community connection.

Residents benefit from the autonomous lifestyle these units offer, providing privacy to entertain friends and family in their unit and decorating their space in their own style. All with the security of knowing that staff are on hand for support when they need it.

NDIS SIL Housing at Barkuma

The structure of Ridley Road’s SIL housing aligns seamlessly with the objectives of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which aims to empower individuals by offering choices and control over their support. This approach not only enhances the quality of life for residents but also aligns with the broader goals of the NDIS Home and Living supports, reinforcing independence and participation in the community.

Behind the success of Ridley Road stands Barkuma, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities in South Australia. Barkuma’s commitment to evidence-based solutions is clear in its strategic development of Ridley Road, building upon the successes and learnings from our two pilot sites in Salisbury.

Both sites underwent significant refurbishments, but it is the layouts that have enabled clients to have their own personal spaces, where they have the autonomy to interact or seek solitude as preferred. The two groups of self-contained units show that the way forward for individuals with intellectual disability and autism is to have their own space in individual units with shared support.

Barkuma has witnessed significant improvements in quality life outcomes in a short period of time, and this has demonstrated just how meaningful the model is and how important it is for people to have a place they can truly call their own.

These capital projects, including the Ridley Rd build, have been wholly financed by Barkuma. Reinvesting in our mission to partner with the community to deliver support and services that improve the lives of people with a disability

A collaboration with YourPlace Housing further amplifies the value Ridley Road offers its residents, marrying expert tenancy management with top-tier NDIS support services. This partnership ensures that the focus remains squarely on enhancing the lives of residents through tailored support that encourages independence, safety, and community engagement.

The opening event displayed the home and emphasized Barkuma’s special focus on ethical, development-focused support. This support is given by dedicated support workers.

Barkuma prides itself on our team and employs like-minded individuals who embody our values and are committed to developing capability, not creating dependence.

Residents at this property will have access to shared support and overnight staffing for safety 24/7.
