New CEO Evelyn O’Loughlin reflects on her first weeks at Barkuma and sets out her priorities for the organisation’s next chapter.
Following her appointment as Chief Executive Officer, Evelyn O’Loughlin has spent her first weeks at Barkuma engaging with staff, participants, partners and stakeholders, and building a strong understanding of the organisation’s work across employment, training and accommodation. Evelyn said her early experience has reinforced her enthusiasm for the role and for Barkuma’s mission.
“I am honoured to be in this role and excited to work alongside the Board, workforce, partners and community to support meaningful outcomes for people with disability. These first weeks have reaffirmed the importance of strong relationships as we shape Barkuma’s next chapter.”
Evelyn noted that Barkuma’s values were a key factor in her decision to join the organisation.
“Barkuma’s unwavering commitment to dignity, inclusion and opportunity for people with disability is clearly evident in its work. These are values that have guided my leadership for more than two decades.”
With over 25 years of CEO, executive and governance experience across the not-for-profit, government and corporate sectors, Evelyn brings significant expertise in strategy, governance and financial stewardship. She has led large multidisciplinary disability teams and managed complex budgets within NDIS and state-funded environments, consistently balancing quality outcomes with financial sustainability.
Evelyn described her leadership approach in strategic terms.
“I believe that strong culture, clear purpose and empowered teams are foundational to delivering outstanding outcomes for clients and families, which will be a key focus of my leadership.”
Looking ahead, Evelyn articulated a clear vision for the organisation.
“My hope is that Barkuma continues to grow as a trusted, innovative and courageous leader in the disability sector, shaping services with people, not just for them.”
Barkuma welcomes Evelyn’s leadership and looks forward to working with her as she continues to engage with staff, participants, partners and stakeholders across South Australia, strengthening existing relationships, building new ones, and helping to shape the organisation’s future with clarity, purpose and confidence.
