There are moments in a career when confidence grows, opportunities appear and the unfamiliar becomes possible. For Laura, the past decade has been shaped by experience, support, and determination.
Where It Started
Laura first joined Barkuma in 2015, beginning work at the Elizabeth site. Until this time, her experience in the workforce was as a volunteer. Paid employment was a new step, offering both opportunity and challenge.
“With Barkuma’s support, I was able to gain meaningful employment and become more confident… before this, I was only volunteering.”
Like many people starting out, the early days were about laying the foundations, establishing routines, developing workplace skills, and gaining confidence in a supportive environment.
Through Supported Employment, Laura was able to take that time, building her skills at a pace that worked for her.
Opening Up Opportunities
As her confidence grew, Laura considered her next steps. With support around her, Laura began to explore opportunities beyond her immediate role, taking steps to build her skills and broaden her experience.
“With Barkuma’s support, I was able to explore more employment opportunities… and completed a certificate at TAFE.”
Through Inclusive Employment Australia, Laura explored what open employment could look like, gaining insight into different roles and environments.
These experiences weren’t just about finding a job. They were about understanding her strengths, building capability, and discovering what suited her.
Finding the Right Fit
Employment journeys don’t always follow a straight line, and for Laura, an important step was recognising where she could continue to grow.
In 2024, she returned to Barkuma’s Commercial Services team through Supported Employment.
“I returned… as I felt I had more skills to develop in my employment journey and was provided again with the supported work environment that suited my goals and structure I like to work with.”
It was a decision grounded in self-awareness, choosing an environment that provided the structure, support and opportunity to keep building.
Stepping Forward
With experience behind her and confidence continuing to grow, Laura began to see new possibilities.
Encouraged by training, Laura tried something she once thought unreachable.
“The training and support I had within my role gave me the confidence to apply and interview for a new role as Peer Supervisor.”
Laura was successful with her application and is now a Peer Supervisor, supporting colleagues while expanding herself.
“This gave me a challenge to develop myself and support my workmates within their roles, while being supported by my team of supervisors.”
Her role highlights the skills and confidence gained along the way.
Looking Ahead
Laura’s journey is still unfolding, shaped by new opportunities and a strong sense of what works for her.
“I am now very proud to say I have become a Peer Supervisor and look forward to other opportunities I may have within Barkuma in the future as my employer of choice.”
At the Future Ready Hub opening, Laura spoke about what it means for others starting out:
“The Future Ready Hub is exciting and gives a broader opportunity for all Barkuma participants to explore their skills and capabilities.”
A Journey That Reflects Many
Laura’s story is one of many at Barkuma. Employment isn’t a single goal; it’s about building skills and confidence and finding the right fit. With the right support in place, that journey can lead to meaningful work, new opportunities, and the chance to support others along the way.
