Celebrating the Class of 2025: Barkuma Transition Program Graduation
On Tuesday 9 December, the Riverbank Rooms at the Adelaide Convention Centre came alive with pride, laughter and a few happy tears as Barkuma celebrated the Transition Program Graduation for the Class of 2025.
Thirty-six young people marked the completion of a year-long program designed to support their next steps beyond school. Graduates present crossed the stage to receive their certificates from Barkuma Chair Ursula Hickey and Interim CEO Maureen Lawlor, a moment recognising commitment, growth and the courage to take on new challenges.
The evening was expertly guided by Barkuma Ambassador Matt Tarrant, who once again brought warmth, humour and a touch of magic as Master of Ceremonies. Matt kept the energy high throughout the night and left the audience amazed with yet another mind-bending magic trick.
A number of speakers shared reflections on the impact of the program. Former Transition student Ella Cox spoke with honesty and heart about her journey since graduating, sharing an important message: it’s okay to not be okay, and asking for help is a strength. Her words resonated deeply with students, families and staff alike.
Lachlan Fraser, affectionately known as the “gentle giant” brought his authentic self to the stage, sharing his experience in a way that was both entertaining and genuinely moving. His confidence and presence lit up the room, and it’s clear this young man is going places.
Chris Polesso, Trainer from WISE Employment, spoke about the work he undertook with students throughout the year, sharing his admiration for their dedication, effort and commitment. His reflections highlighted the consistency and perseverance shown by the group across the program.
Maddy Walter, alongside her Case Manager Ashleigh Brauer, shared how the Transition Program was truly transformative. Their story reflected the power of the right support at the right time, and the confidence that comes from stepping outside your comfort zone.
Following the formal proceedings, the celebrations continued with a smorgasbord of delicious food, live music and a much-loved photobooth. Students celebrated their achievements with family, friends and supporters, capturing moments of joy and fun that reflected just how far they’ve come.
We extend our sincere thanks to our sponsors StreetFleet and Adelaide Venue Management for their generous support. Adelaide Venue Management provided the Riverbank Rooms at the Adelaide Convention Centre, along with outstanding catering and a dedicated function team who helped make the night seamless and memorable.
The Transition Program is about more than moving from school to work. It’s about building friendships, developing skills, growing confidence and connection; creating opportunities for young people to live their all.
To the Class of 2025: Congratulations. Your journey continues, and we can’t wait to see what comes next.
