More Than Workplace Training
The purpose of our training program is simple – to help production workers thrive at work.
Training gives production workers the practical skills and knowledge to perform their roles safely, while developing the independence and self-belief that comes from mastering something new. It also builds understanding of workplace expectations and the behaviours needed to succeed in any role.
Importantly, these skills extend well beyond the production floor. They’re transferable, supporting meaningful employment throughout a person’s working life – whether that journey continues at Barkuma or leads to open employment.
Learning Skills That Employers Value
Our training focuses on the practical skills every workplace relies on.
Safety is a key priority, covering safe work practices, personal protective equipment, manual handling, emergency procedures, heat stress, hygiene and infection control – building the know-how to work safely and protect themselves and others.
We also focus on professional behaviours: communication, teamwork, workplace relationships, personal presentation, boundaries and the Code of Conduct. These skills help production workers become valued members of their team and contribute to a positive culture.
Rounding this out is training in responsibilities such as privacy and confidentiality, feedback and complaints processes, and HACCP and food safety – building the professionalism expected in today’s workplaces.
Learning Through Real Work
One of the greatest strengths of learning at Barkuma is that training happens alongside genuine work. Production workers put new knowledge into practice immediately, reinforcing what they’ve learned in an authentic setting.
This connection between learning and doing is what makes training meaningful. Rather than simply completing a course, production workers see firsthand how new skills improve their work, sharpen their independence and strengthen their contribution to the team.
A More Engaging Way to Learn
This year, Barkuma introduced a new approach to training for our Business and Commercial Services production workers.
Production workers are now allocated to dedicated training groups and follow a planned calendar, giving training a regular, predictable place in their work routine rather than being ad hoc. Sessions have also become more interactive – combining related topics and using demonstrations, discussions and hands-on activities to keep participants engaged, with regular breaks built in to help them stay focused.
Seeing the Difference
The benefits are already showing.
Production workers are participating more actively, engaging with the content and leaving sessions with a genuine sense of achievement. Many are applying their new knowledge back on the job, strengthening both their own capability and the teams they work within.
Perhaps most importantly, the new approach is helping build a positive learning culture – one where training is seen not as a requirement, but as a valuable part of personal and professional development.
