Term 2 was a vibrant and engaging time for our students, filled with hands-on experiences, valuable learning opportunities, personal development and growth. Here’s a snapshot of the exciting journey.
Real-world insights through worksite visits
Students went on several hands-on visits to Bunnings, IKEA, Des’s Mini Bus, the InterContinental Hotel, and headspace. These excursions provided firsthand exposure to diverse industries – from retail and hospitality to community transport and mental health services.
By talking directly with staff, students learned more about what employers expect. They asked important questions and got helpful tips for interviews and daily tasks. These experiences sparked reflection on possible career pathways and encouraged curiosity about where a first job could lead.
Supporting mental health with headspace
Barkuma continues to partner with headspace, recognising the vital role mental health plays in a young person’s ability to learn and grow. Some students may face challenges that impact their capacity to engage in school and future work.
headspace helps students understand what mental health challenges may look like, apply strategies to manage them, and know where and how to seek support.
Learning about personal safety with SAPOL
Students welcomed representatives from South Australia Police (SAPOL) for an engaging session focused on personal safety. Officers covered a range of important topics, with a particular emphasis on staying safe online and within the community.
Students heard firsthand experiences that highlighted the importance of making informed choices and recognising potential risks. They had the opportunity to ask questions and reflect on how to apply these lessons in their daily lives.
Exploring career pathways with guest speakers
Several guest speakers from industries aligned with students’ interests visited throughout the term. These sessions helped students explore career pathways, understand workplace expectations, and identify key skills for future success.
Building life skills and teamwork
Students participated in a wide range of activities designed to strengthen teamwork and essential life skills. A strong focus was placed on preparing for real-world challenges, including work readiness, collaboration, time management, and personal organisation.
These skills were included in classroom activities through group work and research projects. This encouraged critical thinking, self-management, and teamwork. The ongoing focus on fostering self-reliance and strong communication skills provided students with resources they can utilise both within and beyond the classroom.
Career preparation and mock interviews
Career preparation was a key focus throughout the term. A highlight was the successful mock interviews, where students demonstrated growth in professionalism and self-confidence.
They practiced effective communication, interview etiquette, and strategies to present themselves with poise and clarity. These sessions provided a realistic, supportive environment to prepare for future opportunities in both education and the workforce.
Celebrating success at Hijinx Hotel
To celebrate the end of a productive term, students enjoyed a well-earned visit to Hijinx Hotel. The vibrant and playful atmosphere provided a chance to connect, relax, and enjoy each other’s company while recognising the effort and progress made throughout the term.
