Transition Program
Chloe’s journey with Barkuma began in 2023 when she joined the Transition program. She quickly flourished in the adult learning environment, enjoying the opportunity to meet new people and explore her interests. It was here that Chloe discovered a growing passion for cooking and hospitality – leading to a successful work experience placement that soon evolved into a long-term volunteer role where she truly thrived.
SLES
Eager to keep building on her experience, Chloe joined Barkuma’s School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES). Through SLES, she formed new friendships and gained the confidence to explore other career options, including childcare. A supported work placement helped her realise that childcare wasn’t the right fit. With Barkuma’s ongoing support services, Chloe was able to reflect on her strengths and rediscover her passion which led to a career pathway in hospitality.
DES
With guidance from Barkuma, Chloe secured a casual position at The Guardsman and now receives support through our Disability Employment Services (DES). She’s thriving in her role, feeling reassured and understood as she continues to grow professionally.
As Chloe puts it: “They support me with my career journey in whatever direction I want to go.”
Chloe’s story is a brilliant example of what’s possible when young people are empowered to explore, reflect, and find their path – with the right support behind them.
