Barkuma’s commitment to digital accessibility

At Barkuma, we believe everyone should have equal access to digital resources, no matter their abilities. We are dedicated to making digital content accessible for people with Autism and intellectual disabilities.

We recognise Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) as an important time to talk about why accessible digital content matters. When digital resources are easy to use, people with disabilities can independently explore and interact with them. Key features like simple screens, clear navigation, and easy-to-.read language are crucial, especially for those with different learning abilities and online experiences.

Introducing the Peer Supervisor Hubs

Our Peer Supervisors do a great job supporting their colleagues, and we are happy to announce the new Peer Supervisor Hubs at both Commercial Services Sites. This initiative gives our Peer Supervisors the tools and skills they need to improve their digital abilities. The program starts with basic skills like turning on a computer, managing passwords, reading and writing emails, and safe internet navigation. As people progress, they will gain confidence in using assistive technologies, joining video calls, and working with tools like Microsoft Teams. With support and visual aids, these sessions make learning engaging and accessible. By giving our Peer Supervisors these skills, we aim to create a more productive and inclusive workplace.

Committed to Continuous Improvement

Barkuma’s website meets web accessibility standards (WCAG2) thanks to UserWay Accessibility features, but we want to make it even better. Our goal is to create a welcoming and easy-to-use online space that allows people with Autism and intellectual disabilities to fully engage in the digital world. To achieve this, we are starting a user testing program to gather feedback from those with lived experiences, ensuring that our website meets their needs.

At Barkuma, we are dedicated to creating an inclusive environment. Our ongoing efforts show our commitment to improving digital accessibility and supporting individuals with Autism and intellectual disabilities. By providing the right tools and resources, we are not just improving access but also helping our community to thrive in a digital world. Together, we can make a real difference, ensuring that everyone can participate fully in society.
