Creating Change Through Advocacy, Leadership and Employment: Thomas’s Story
When Thomas walked across the stage at the 2026 7 News Young Achiever Awards, he wasn’t just accepting an award. He was being recognised for the difference he is making in the lives of others.
Thomas received the Create Change Award, which celebrates young people who inspire positive change through leadership, innovation and initiatives that make a meaningful impact in their communities.
For Thomas, creating change starts with sharing his voice and helping others understand the experiences of people with intellectual disability.
Using His Voice to Make a Difference
Over the past year, Thomas has delivered an impressive 19 workshops through the South Australian Council on Intellectual Disability (SACID).
SACID works alongside people with intellectual disability to promote inclusion, rights and equal participation in community life. Through his presentations and workshops, Thomas has helped educate audiences, challenge assumptions and encourage more inclusive communities.
By sharing his lived experience, Thomas is helping others better understand the importance of accessibility, respect and opportunity for people with intellectual disability.
His willingness to stand in front of audiences, tell his story and advocate for change is making a real difference.
Success in the Workplace
Alongside his advocacy work, Thomas is also building a successful career in open employment. Thomas is employed at the Sofitel, one of Adelaide’s leading hotels, where he has been supported by Barkuma to secure and maintain his role.
Recently, Thomas spoke about how grateful he feels to work for a quality employer in such a stunning environment. His role at the Sofitel demonstrates what is possible when employers focus on a person’s strengths and provide an inclusive workplace where employees can thrive.
Employment is about more than a job. It creates opportunities to build skills, develop connections, contribute to a team and pursue personal goals. For Thomas, employment has become another platform from which he continues to grow and contribute to his community.
