Community Living Support

Barkuma’s community living support service provides individualised assistance to adults with intellectual and other disabilities to help them maintain an independent, happy and healthly lifestyle in the community. This support is provided in a range of settings, from the family home, to a rental home or other private accommodation.

The service is designed to increase independence, self reliance and to encourage community participation.  It includes one-to-one training and assistance with a variety of tasks, depending on individual needs, such as managing money, home maintenance, shopping, diet and food preparation, personal hygiene, accessing transport and other community based services.

Service delivery is based around an individual lifestyle plan, developed in close consultation with each client.  These plans address individual client support needs in all areas of daily life and promote continual development, while allowing sufficient flexibility to respond to changing circumstances.

Barkuma Community Support is one of the most progressive organisations of its type in the country, helping to develop policy and best practice models for the sector.  Barkuma’s accommodation service was one of the first in Australia to receive external quality accreditation, and it leads the way in ensuring client independence by placing all leases and tenancy agreements in the names of its clients.

To be eligible to receive a support people must:

  • Be 16 years or older
  • Reside in the northern suburbs or Barossa Valley region
  • Complete a successful trial period
